I Write Death Sentences

I am at the hospital doing ultrasound. It has been a busy day with almost 26 patients.

A woman wearing a headscarf walks in. Our neighborhood has a large Muslim population so the scarf does not stand out. I start reading her notes. She is a cancer patient. The scarf wrapped around her head is meant to hide the thinning and loss of her hair.

Malignant cells had frozen over her womb. Her family was complete, so there was no more childbearing anyway. The womb could be removed surgically without social complications.
